Cushing's syndrome
Do not overlook this serious illness, which is manifested by excessive drinking and urination.
Cushing's syndrome is a disease of the endocrine system. There is an overproduction of glucocorticoids, especially cortisol. This hormone is important for the regulation of protein, sugar and fat metabolism.
The production of cortisol occurs in the adrenal gland and is controlled by the pituitary gland. Its excessive amount negatively affects the overall metabolism of the organism.
The cause of hyperadrenocorticism is most often a pituitary tumor (about 80% of cases), adrenal cortex tumor (about 20% of cases).
It may also sometimes develop as a result of the long-term administration of corticosteroids in the treatment of other diseases (the so-called biogenic Cushing's syndrome).
The disease develops gradually and unnoticed.
The most common symptoms are PÚPD, ie. polyuria and polydipsia, excessive drinking and urination. Changes in skin and hair loss can be observed. Increased fatigue, shortness of breath and high pressure.
Body weight is increased, the abdomen is sagging. The immune system is also compromised, wound healing is impaired, and susceptibility to infection is increased.
For the treatment of hyperadrenocorticism in dogs, particularly medical treatment is used. It consists of lifelong administration of cortisol lowering drugs.
If not treated, there are other serious diseases such as diabetes, heart, kidney, liver failure.
